Release Candidates for Server, Workgroup, and Server Editions

Testing of the Jungle Disk Desktop/Workgroup 3.0 and Server Editon releases continues to go well and today we’re pleased to make “release candidate” versions available for download. These versions address all of our outstanding issues and we do not expect any major changes between now and the final releases.

This release (2.95a) includes a large number of fixes and improvements, particularly in performance and robustness. You can find a detailed list of changes in the Desktop & Workgroup Edition Release Notes, or the Server Edition Release Notes. We recommend all existing beta testers upgrade to the Release Candidate release, and any of existing users who haven’t tried the beta but want to get an early look at 3.0 should try the new versions now!

One immediately obvious (but purely cosmetic) change you’ll notice in this release is our new logo and icon. We’re getting ready to re-vamp our website design for the final release and have a new logo and color scheme to go with it. I’m not going to spoil the surprise here – you’ll have to check out the software if you want a sneak peek.

You can download the new release candidate (2.95a) below:

We’ll also be turning on automatic updates for beta customers today (this will only offer the update to customers already running a beta version).

If you experience any issues running the Release Candidate, please post to our Desktop/Workgroup beta forum or Server Edition beta forum.

    The program name and new graphics don’t exactly match IMO

    Who does your creative? Is it all in-house?
    The new typeface is nice, but I really don’t understand the concept behind the logomark…

    @Shaun

    It seems to be a play off Rackspace colors and design.

    I think the new logo looks better but I agree it doesn’t really fit with the name anymore unless I am missing something. I’d like to know the reason behind it but my guess is that jungledisk will get renamed one day, after all it’s owned by rackspace and undoubtedly they’d prefer people would associate it with rackspace & it’s cloud files over amazon so lose the jungle would make sense.

    Well, it’s certainly a more conceptual interpretation than our literal “jungle disk” icon previously. The new logo represents files in motion.

    We don’t have any plans to change the Jungle Disk name, but we are going to start selling through some of the existing Rackspace sales channels soon, so pulling the overall design and color scheme closer to that of Rackspace should help make those customers more comfortable.

    It looks nice, but I still can’t fit the too with the name of Jungle Disk. Might be because I am so new to it, and may take a day or so since I am so used to the previous icon being in my taskbar…

    Perhaps we can have an option to jump between two different GUI’s ? I would be game for that, and it wouldn’t be too terrible to add to the Jungle Disk interface.

    *Fit the new name*

    I don’t exactly “get” the new logo, but it does look about 10x better sitting in my OS X menu bar! So much so that I let it stay there now, so job well done.

    Any news on when the white label version of this will be available?

    Hey JungleDave,

    I have desktop edition running on Win2k3. Will the server edition recognize the settings and already uploaded files, or do I have to reupload the files?

    I didn’t see this information listed, and I’m in the process of uploading files with JD Desktop newly installed on Win2k3. I’m interested in running the server edition soon.

    For me it conjures the image of a rhino’s horn, which your could say is jungle-y.

    Rex – the Server Edition uses a completely new format for storing the backup data to enable compression and de-duplication, so you would need to re-upload the data.

    James – it will be shortly after the final release.

    @Jungle Dave -

    You mention that the new Server Edition uses a completely new format for data storage. I thought that the new desktop/workgroup client was using that same engine/technology?

    The release notes for the desktop/workgroup client indicate the following:
    An all new backup engine, built on the same technology we created for the Server Edition, and incorporating features such as compression, de-duplication, and large file support.

    Is it not compatible between Server and Desktop/Workgroup if you are using Vaults?

    @Bud – you can use from the Desktop 3.0 Vaults to the Server Edition without re-uploading your data, however I suspect Rex was talking about 2.x Desktop backups.

    @Jungle Dave,

    Files in motion? OK that makes sense but I dont think it’s obvious enough. Its still much better than the previous icon though, like Matt Jacob said it looks sweet on OSX.
