Home Server Plans

In response to our Jungle Disk 2.50 post, we’ve received a number of questions as to how this affects the Windows Home Server version of the software which is still officially in beta, and when an update might be expected. The good news is that the 2.50 release will lay the groundwork for our next major iteration of home server backup. The Windows Home Server version of Jungle Disk was originally a bit of an experiment, to help understand the demand and needs of the Home Server / Home NAS backup market. One of the most important things we’ve learned over the last year is that the Windows Home Server platform alone isn’t really large enough to justify a stand-alone product, but there is a large amount of interest in online backup from users with other brands of home NAS devices from Linksys, Netgear, Qnap, Drobo, and others.

Moving forward, we are focusing on a strategy that allows us to support a wide range of these devices in addition to Windows Home Server.  The separation of the backup service from the GUI in the 2.50 release will be one key step in allowing us to do this. Porting the software to these other devices will also take some time, but we expect it will be made easier by the fact that we already support Linux and non-Intel (PPC) platforms. In the end, we plan to provide a unified online backup solution for the entire home server and NAS market.

Do you have a home NAS device you’d like to backup directly with Jungle Disk? If so, leave a comment with the brand and model.

I have a 500GB LaCie Ethernet disk that I’d like to backup directly. Currently I use a Mac running Jungle Disk Desktop to back it up.

Netgear SC101 and 101T. They’re slow, but cheap, and if you format them with NTFS they work fine.

Yes! This is music to my ears! Please support the Infrant (Netgear) ReadyNAS series. Its got linux underneath, so its probably not a giant leap to get working.

and while we are on the topic of feature requests, please allow for backup of selected volumes or shares. I like to keep two volumes; one for data that I want backed up, and another for bulk media that I don’t need backed up. After all, keeping a full TB NAS backed up would get expensive very quickly.

    Thanks Again!

I have a ReadyNAS NV which I’d love to have JD on.

Drobo isn’t NAS, because the first N in NAS is network. Drobo does sell a NAS adapter but I don’t know very much about it.

@David - the idea would be you could install some software on the Drobo so that it backs itself up without your PC even running (I realize by default the Drobo connects to your PC and runs off USB, but it also has a NAS option).

+1 for WHS Console…I’m all for multiple platform support, but having the WHS Console is super nice. I am actually using the WHS version instead of 2.0/2.50 for backup of multiple PCs, well at least the important documents from those machines. Right now WHS+JungleDisk has a better story for me than JungleDisk alone. I get baremetal restore from WHS, I get Amazon S3 geographically redundant backup for my critical documents however with high-speed local restore when needed.

Qnap TS-109. Also Apple Time Capsule

It’s important for me that I know how much data goes back/forth as well as to be able to control what times of the day the backup is run. This is because I’m in Australia, and the ISP’s here all impose upload & download caps. There are no unlimited plans.

Preferably this would be available from jungledisk if I login to a website, rather than requiring me to login to the actual devices (which are not always accessible). Also helpful if the backup can resume where it left off automatically (to take care of unreliable adsl lines), or at specified times (to avoid clashing with periods of heavy use by other applications).

Thanks and keep up the great work!

I current use Jungle Disk for WHS to backup my WHS and have done so for almost a year With ZERO problems. The cost is less than $7 a month, and is well worth it for piece of mind. I like the interface in WHS and hope moving forward that SOME type of support for WHS continues on. I will gladly pay for the WHS version.

I’ve got a Linksys NSLU2 running Debian and acting has a home fileserver. I would love to get JungleDisk running on this so it could just be automatically backing everything up. The NSLU2 has an ARM processor, so a version compiled for that would be great.

Are there any known issues with just using remote desktop to get to the windows home server and then purchasing and installing the Jungle Disk’s Windows desktop software directly on the server rather than using the windows home server add-in?

It may not be as easy as the Home Server add-in but then you don’t have the all or nothing shared folder backup issue, etc. and can also use the desktop version built-in e-mail reporting features.

+1 for WHS. I only became a desktop customer because of the WHS product. I would hate to see this product never make it out of beta, but I’ll keep using it if it doesn’t until it stops working. What a kick in the nuts for those with WHS!

I was actually running (and paid for) JungleDisk Desktop on XP backing up my Buffalo TersStation NAS, but as I was low on disk I decided to “upgrade” to WHS, which as a product is awesome. I was hoping to stick with JungleDisk as I have been really impressed with your product to date. However this statement has me fumig (for over a week now!). I hope whatever replaces the WHS version can upgrade from the current beta and works well for WHS users.

In the meantime I’m off to investigate whether I can install the Desktop edition (looks lile I’ll be about as well provided for and supported as the WHS and it’s direction announced here) on WHS and also other online backup options/suppliers.

    Aaarggghhhh!!!

Windows Home Server please - there is no way I would even be thinking about JD/S3 if it wasn’t for Windows Home Server. Whilst it may seem like the market is small now, I expect that moving your product out of perpetual beta would win over a lot more users. After all who wants to backup their life with beta software? Not that many, but aI expect a lot are already doing it as there is no alternative. I would also bet that Microsoft gains greater market share in future…Is this softening in focus because you think Microsoft might release something with Azure?l that competes with JD and S3?
