Updated versions of the Desktop and Workgroup Edition of Jungle Disk are now available for download. Version 2.02a is primarily a maintenance release, fixing a number of issues outlined in the Release Notes. We did, however, manage to sneak in one highly requested new feature for Mac users. You can now choose to have Jungle Disk appear in the Menu bar instead of the dock, for those that prefer a less cluttered dock view.

One issue that was fixed that deserves some additional explaination is a problem with Unicode (non-ascii) file / directory names in Jungle Disk 2.0 buckets. In some cases we’ve had users report seeing “duplicate” files or folders, one with the correct name, and one with the Unicode characters replaced by question marks (?). We tracked down the problem, and it turned out to be caused by a problem with a few servers on Amazon S3 itself, not with the Jungle Disk software. You can see the technical description of the problem and Amazon’s response here. Amazon has corrected the problem on their end, so it won’t affect any uploads going forward. For data that has already been uploaded, we’ve updated our Consistency Check feature (on the Help menu) to detect and correct the duplicate filenames. After upgrading to 2.02a we recommend all users with Jungle Disk 2.0 buckets run the Consistency Check to ensure that any stray duplicates are cleaned up.

Jippi, the menu bar feature rocks, but why may i not close the monitor window?

Dumb question: how do I run the consistency check? I don’t see it as an option in the application or configuration settings anywhere?

Here is a little guidance in the Jungle Disk User Guide.

@Jungle Scott: Thanks. I suppose it would help if I actually read the post a bit more carefully.
But like consumr said, I cannot make the JungleDisk monitor window close or hide when I have the icon in the status bar. %H doesn’t work and the Show Monitor menu option doesn’t seem to be a toggle.

Glad you like the status bar feature.
We’ll be working on improving the behavior of the ‘dockless’ option for the next release; for now I’m afraid you’ll have to settle for obscuring it with other windows. Please feel free to post any other non-Mac-like behavior in the Mac forum: http://forum.jungledisk.com/viewforum.php?f=4 (A thread on this topic already seems to have materialized, in fact.) Thanks!

What’s the process to upgrade to a new version – Uninstall then Full Install? Is all config kept?
Jungle Dave said,

You can just install over the current version, your config is kept intact (the one exception is the USB version – make sure you don’t extract the default config over your existing configuration).

Thanks for the info about the problems with UTF8 characters. It is encouraging to see that they fixed the issue in the same day you posted on their boards!

I love your products and plan on using them (eventually) in my production application. When will you support the workgroup client installed as a service?
Thanks!
Ryan

Awesome stuff guys!
You know I’m having a hard time dealing with other software developers after using JD … none of them compare to your guys level of support, commitment, and communication
Keep up the good work!

[...] Jungle Disk is like traditional software in that it is downloaded and run by your desktop computer. It gives a point-and-click interface to select which files and folders to back up and over what schedule (if any). The above screenshot was taken during an (easy-peesy) initial backup of my Documents folder in version 2.02 [...]

I like Jungle Disk.
I’m trying to promote it to the folks at work but they are synical.
How can I convince them the data is really secure sitting on Amazon’s servers?
I know it’s encrypted before it leaves my workstation and uses a SSL transport to get to S3 but …
How can I prove to them the keys are REALLY only known to me and Jungle doesn’t
keep a separate copy in their top desk drawer?
Thanks,
J

James – we’ve released source code that demonstrates how the Jungle Disk encryption works, and verifies that your files are encrypted only using your personal, private key.
As for keeping the key – we have no interest and no need to keep it.
