Jungle Disk 3.1 is Released

We’re extremely excited to announce that Jungle Disk 3.1 and version 3.1 of our reseller products are now available via the software download page.  Automatic updates will be turned on early next week to allow customers to download and install the update directly within the software.

As a reminder, this update adds public file sharing to our Desktop and Workgroup products.   We’re now able to support three simple and convenient ways to share files outside of Jungle Disk.

  • Create a share via web access by right-clicking on any file and choosing the ‘Share’ option.
  • Right-click on any file within a Jungle Disk Network Drive and select the ‘Share with Jungle Disk’ option.  This method eliminates the need to log in to web access and does not require a file upload.
  • Local files on your computer that do not reside on Jungle Disk can also be shared by right-clicking on the file and selecting the ‘Share with Jungle Disk’ option. Behind the scenes, Jungle Disk will first upload the file to an online disk that is selected in the configuration and then generate a sharing URL.

Public file sharing links will automatically expire after 1 week, however, you can always customize the expiration date via the file share management page.

Another new feature that has been included in the Workgroup Edition and Reseller versions is the ability for sub-accounts to change their account passwords if the master account holder enables that option.  Sub-accounts can change their password directly in the software under the Application Settings.

This release also contains several fixes and updates so please take the time to read the release notes for the products that you are installing or updating:

I see mention in the release notes of Backup Vault Cleanup now appearing in Server, but in the product itself I also see Backup Vault Optimization. I don’t see that documented anywhere though. Is it new or just new to Server? Can you give an example of what a “long time” would be for an example vault size?

How does the share file work when I have encryption setup for a drive? Does it just reupload the file to a non-encrypted disk for sharing?

Also when is the reduced redundancy storage (RRS) for amazon s3 buckets going to be enabled?

Files shared from a network drive are not moved anywhere…they are shared directly from the drive itself. The drive in the configuration for file sharing is only for OS based shares where the file only exists on the computer and needs to be uploaded. Therefore, when sharing files from encrypted disks, you would need to give the encryption password to the recipient. It is recommended that you generate shares from a non-encrypted disk.

Great news Guys !! Congratulations on 3.1.

I have a quick question on the file sharing. Just tried it out. Upon sharing the file, the JD web interface generates a shortened link to that file.

However – its not a direct link. Its just a web download link. How do I generate a direct link. i.e I don’t want my users to have to click any other button on web interface after they’ve clicked the jd link I sent.

Lets say I shared an MP3 ebook. I want JD to generate a link that can directly be fed into a VLC player and it will start streaming.

I can do this with Amazon S3 public link. How do I do this with JD share files ?

Thanks for help. You guys rock.

    Hi there,

I’ve been using Jungle Disk for well over a year – running in the background on my Windows Server 2000 machine. Its been working a treat, but I’ve just realised I haven’t been getting my backup reports via email.

On investigating I have found that Jungle Disk Desktop has simply vanished from the PC! Logging in to your website reveals my backups stopped abruptly in July. I tried installing the current release of J.D. Desktop but it errors each time, so I dug out the original install file I downloaded (v 2.61a) and that’s installed fine, rembered my settings and seems to working fine.

Have you any ideas what could have caused my problems?

    Thanks,

    James Martin

ESET Smart Security is and has been reporting the 32bit reseller version as a virus, it won’t allow download or install.

I agree with Amit, a direct link to the file content would be a great option to have.

P.S. I also wanted to ask about the feasibility of setting up a Sync Folder for our Desktop in Windows (both the user Desktop and the public Desktop). I’ve been noticing that JD’s sync icon overlays appear over and over on all my desktop icons, even when there aren’t any changes. It happens when I just run something from the desktop, when I’m emptying the Recycle Bin, etc. It even happens when I’m not doing anything and just stare at the desktop!

Yet I see nothing in my JD Workgroup Activity Monitor. So is this just a bug with the display of the sync overlay icons in Windows, or is the Desktop folder syncing actually being falsely triggered?

We have been using Jungle Disk for several months now to do automatic backups on our small corporate file server. I love the bandwidth you make available to push our files up to the cloud. A+ on this!

Are you considering (if you can reveal this info) adding support for Exchange backups, too? We kept the cloud backup of our Exchange server with a competing company, and they are quite expensive with little support.

So, we would love to see Exchange support added in the near future!

    Thanks!

I got a notice today that v3.12 has been released (currently have “v3.1.0.0″). What has changed between since the release notes still go to 3.1 and I wanted to know if a couple issues I had in 3.1 were fixed.

Searching for this blog on Google shows some very strange article titles, try for yourself with something like “jungledisk blog” (without the quotes). I believe you’ve been hacked. Look into this, okay?

When will we be able to map NTSF drives using the Workgroup edition?

My client refuses to download the update, saying it’s improperly signed. I’mm running 3.0.8 on OSX.

OK, I’m getting concerned. Almost 4 months since the last post here from JungleDisk. No software updates in a long time.

I hate to say it, but I’m afraid that Dropbox is eating your lunch. And AFAIK, your service is actually superior to theirs. But it appears that their marketing is running rings around yours.

Maybe there’s trouble in Rackspace land?

    I totally second G. Lewis.

I am getting a little nervous not seeing any chatter or activity here.

Dropbox or no dropbox. JungleDisk is the king of its own little jungle. It doesn’t need to worry.

It is quiet. Some people may not even know that there were a couple releases subsequent to 3.10 — it’s up to 3.13 now, released in late October — but they were never blogged about.
