Jungle Disk Launches an All New Product Lineup

Today is the biggest launch in Jungle Disk history! We’re officially launching two new products and major updates for our two current products, as well as an entirely new website and logo. Here’s what’s new:

  • Jungle Disk Desktop Edition 3.0: A major update to our premier personal storage product, Jungle Disk Desktop 3.0 adds Sync and an entirely new backup engine that is faster and more efficient than ever.
  • Jungle Disk Workgroup Edition 3.0: Our online storage product for small businesses and teams gains Sync support, our new backup engine, and administrator feature control.
  • Jungle Disk Simply Backup: An entirely new product for home users that are looking for simple, secure, and reliable backup for their important personal files.
  • Jungle Disk Server Edition: Built from the ground up for the demands of large scale server backup, Jungle Disk Server Edition makes it easy to remotely manage backups and restores for Windows and Linux servers from any desktop.

Covering everything that is new in these releases is too much for one blog post. If you’d like to know more about the new products and features, please read our previous announcement posts:

As always, upgrades are free for current customers.  Automatic update notifications will be turned on later this week, but for existing customers (including beta users) who want to upgrade to the latest versions now, you can download them from our new Download section. Before upgrading, you should read through the Release Notes which are linked from the download page. They cover common questions and give an overview of what you need to know about the new features in this release.

There are a few items covered in the release notes that we want to highlight here as well:

  • Server Edition beta customers on Linux will need to reset your license key (and update your jungledisk-license.xml file with the new key) after updating to the final release.
  • The 3.0 Desktop and Workgroup products on Mac now require OSX 10.5 or higher. The Sync feature requires an API only present in Leopard, and only a tiny percentage of our Mac users are still on 10.4. Existing users on 10.4 can continue to use Jungle Disk 2.62.
  • The new Backup Vault feature in Desktop and Workgroup stores backups in an entirely new format that utilizes compression and de-duplication for high efficiency. The existing Network Drive-based backup feature is still present in 3.0 under the “Legacy Backup” settings. If you want to move from Legacy Backup to a Backup Vault your data will be re-uploaded into the Backup Vault. For detailed instructions see this KB article.
  • We’ve made some pricing changes, however they only affect new subscriptions – current subscription prices are not affected.

Now that the new version has been released, will there be sample code that explains the new S3 backup format? Also, where is the old sample code located now that the download area has been re-worked.

    thanks,

David – we’re working on getting the updated code together and it will be on the site when we’re done.

    Hi guys – two questions:
    1) What’s the difference between your new products and the new Rackspace Cloud Drive product (which is presumably being run by you guys too…)
    2) Any word on the reseller apps? Would like to test as soon as poss…

    Thanks
    James

James – they are exactly the same. The main advantage of buying through Rackspace Apps is that you can get hosted e-mail bundled in to the same bill.

Reseller versions are coming soon – they are tops on the list.

    Cool – good news.
So is “Cloud Drive” the Workgroup edition?

Nice work guys – new site is great.

    The “download section” link in the post 404′s after you login now so I figure that needs to be updated;

I was also a bit confused initially about downloading the 3.0 software as the button is labeled “purchase” even though I’m logged in already.

The download link above is broken (I believe it should be downloads.aspx rather than download.aspx). I found my way to the download page, but only see links to “Purchase”. When I click to “Purchase”, I am told “The account you’ve logged in with already has a Jungle Disk Desktop license.” Where are the actual download links?

    Nevermind, found it.

It’s a pity that an annoying Mac bug hasn’t been solved: The JD window can only be enlarged in vertical direction, not in horizontal direction. As a consequence, ugly horizontal scrolling becomes necessary.

Can anyone tell me if the Rackspace cloud storage is replicated (or redundant) in multiple data centers? I have seen this asked but never a verified answer.

    Thanks
    Al

  11. Jungle Dave said,

    November 17, 2009 @ 10:31 am

Al – it’s currently replicated within multiple availability zones in a single datacenter.

Is there some way for existing users to know if they are on (or switch between) Desktop, Simple Backup, Workgroup, etc ?

  13. Matt Stevens said,

    November 17, 2009 @ 11:13 am

I’m having the same problem as the other Matt; the downloads page shows only “Purchase” buttons (desktop lifetime user).

  14. Jungle Dave said,

    November 17, 2009 @ 11:40 am

If you go to the Downloads page linked in the post above it will show you Download links for any products you own and Purchase links for any that you don’t.

FYI, we’ve fixed the Download links for Desktop Lifetime subscribers (where it was showing Purchase before). Sorry for the mixup!

Does 2.96a=3.00? Otherwise do you have a list of changes between the two (Server)?

Can a user use both the Desktop Edition and the Workgroup Edition at the same time now? I’ve been interested in using the Workgroup Edition as a network drive for my company for a long time now but haven’t done this because several co-workers use the Desktop Edition already to back up their computers. We have a virtual company where a lot of people work out of their homes.

  19. Jungle Dave said,

Rob – yes, you should be able to.

    Hi,

As a current Desktop user without the need for network drive, I am considering moving to the Simple Backup solution. However, the migration does not seem to be “simple” for two reasons:

    - I do not see any way to downgrade from a Dektop2.0 subscription to a Simple Backup subscription.
    - The KB article describing how to migrate data from a legacy backup to a backup vault is helpful, but won’t you provide solutions to migrate it without re-uploading everything? For users like me who spent weeks uploading their content no later than one month ago, it is quite frustrating to see that the investment in time and cost for uploading is lost if one wants to take advantage of the new backup features.

I regret that the migration is difficult, but anyway, thanks for these new features, it was the way to go!

    -Brice

  21. Jungle Dave said,

    November 17, 2009 @ 1:38 pm

rick – no, there were changes since 2.96, mostly minor fixes and improvements.

  22. Jungle Dave said,

    November 17, 2009 @ 1:42 pm

Brice – you can simply cancel the Desktop subscription and sign up for Simply Backup. You may want to migrate your data and delete it from the network drive first, as Simply Backup won’t let you access the network drive any more.
Unfortunately we don’t have a migration solution to the new backup vaults that doesn’t require re-uploading. The data is stored in a completely different format, and due to the security measures and encryption used by Jungle Disk we can’t simply move the data into the new format on the server-side.

I only use Jungle Disk for a network drive. Do I need to do anything to change to the new version? I can’t tell if anything has changed with basic network drive functionality.

Also, what’s the difference between a network drive and an online disk?

    Congrats on the new launch!

  25. Jungle Dave said,

    November 17, 2009 @ 11:06 pm

Jon – no, just upgrade the software. We’ve made some performance improvements in the network drive, and you can make use of the new Sync feature to keep a local folder in-sync with a folder on the Network Drive, even across multiple PCs.

  26. Chris said,

I’m a JD Desktop lifetime user, and have until now subscribed to the “Jungle Disk Plus” feature mostly for the block-level updates (I don’t really use the web access feature).

Does the new Backup Vault feature do block-level by default (and thus allow me to cancel JD Plus)?

  27. Jungle Dave said,

    November 19, 2009 @ 4:39 pm

Chris – Backup Vaults can do block-level updates without JD+, however JD+ is still required if you want block level updates / upload resume on the network drive, or if you use Web Access.

I have a a single linux server running Centos and a few virtual machines running under OpenVZ. You install clips show and installation using a Desktop GUI. Does the GUI desktop have to be running for Jungledisk to do the backups or does it run as a service? Also would I be expected to buy a separate license for each vm on the server?

  29. Jungle Dave said,

    November 20, 2009 @ 9:35 am

Rick – the server edition runs as a service and does not require a GUI on the server. You can run the GUI on your desktop to connect to and manage the servers.
If you’re running the software inside the VM, a license will be required for each VM.

I guess I’m one of the tech savvy customers who appreciated the cleanly separated client-storage architecture, the community feel of the support and a feature set aimed a clued-up user looking for a toolkit to back up half a dozen machines every night.

However the recent changes have left me feeling ambivalent about my future with Jungle Disk. Understandably now that you’ve got some traction and some finacial backing you are developing for a different type of customer – a bigger market of less sophisticated users. I see that I’m now a ‘legacy’ customer, and I guess being on the old pricing model as well, of diminishing interest to JD.

So there’s now a gap in the market where JD used to be. C’mon open source community, I’m ready.

Quick question. Is there a server edition available for resellers? or do we only get an unbranded workgroup edition?

  32. Jungle Dave said,

    November 22, 2009 @ 9:34 pm

Stephen – we expect to have a reseller server edition by end of the year.

  33. Aaron said,

    @Peter
I’m in the same boat with you. I’m a “legacy” user that wants to stick to the command line and do some pretty simple backups. Jungle Disk’s squashing of the community forums a few years ago and now the fee-based structure are leaving me with a bad taste in my mouth.

I’ve been hacking away at various open and closed source replacements for Jungle Disk and have settled on S3 commander for my headless Linux box. It doesn’t fully support encryption yet, but it’s free (FREE!) and offers a sleek command line interface that allows swift and easy control of buckets. The delete functions of s3cmd are at least an order of magnitude faster than in Jungle Disk. It also includes a synchronization option much like the backup features of the old (2.x) versions of Jungle Disk. it’s fairly easy to configure and offers exclude/include rule sets, regular expression sets and quite a few other features. The price is definitely right at the moment.

I don’t know if I’m ready to make the plunge again and upload 80GiB through s3cmd, but unless Jungle Disk changes things around in a hurry, I’m off to greener or at least more open pastures.

I’m just curious to know what the new logo is supposed to be or represent. The old logo was nice, but I can’t figure out this new one.

I am also a legacy user that used to recommend JD to others, but no longer do because of the monthly fees. Bring back the flat-fee product, and I will once again start recommending you to others.

  36. Jungle Dave said,

    November 24, 2009 @ 10:37 am

Adam – it’s a bit more abstract obviously, and supposed to represent files in motion.
As for the monthly fees, aren’t you already paying monthly fees for Amazon storage? Why the objection to fees for the software? Compared to the old one-time purchase option plus the $1 Jungle Disk Plus subscription (which is now included for all users), the new pricing is less even expensive for the first few years.

    Hello,

I was just about to buy two more copies of Jungle Disk to install for my family and discovered the recent changes in pricing. To be blunt, this isn’t simply changing the pricing, this fundamentally changing what the product is from a buy-once to a subscription-only product.

I am disappointed to see there is no option to purchase the software like I originally did without the ongoing subscription. Unfortunately I’m not going to buy Jungle Disk now, because what we need is what Jungle Disk used to be – not what it has become. It is a shame, because prior to this subscription requirement Jungle Disk was exactly the product I had been looking for and was very happy with it.

Please consider restoring the self-managed, subscription-free storage as an option again because I would prefer to remain a customer and to continue to recommend JD to my friends and family. But I can’t at this time due to the subscription requirement.

    Best regards,

    Hi!
I finally found the time to try today the server edition (after using almost since the beginning the desktop edition!).

I am currently backing up the data on a VPS, but I am a bit confused about how these backups work. I can see in the client management app (linux edition) that the back up is going on fine etc. But what happens if I close the client app? Will the backup continue or not? Also, if the client app is shut down, will the scheduled backup still occur on the server?
I hope backing up servers this way does not mean we need to depend on a PC up and running!

    Thanks in advance
    Vito

  39. Jungle Dave said,

    November 25, 2009 @ 3:17 pm

Vito – There is no need to keep the client management app running unless you want to check the status or reconfigure. The backups will proceed on the server without it.

Can a backup vault made with the reseller edition be used for the reseller server edition when it becomes available? I’d like to get a start on creating the backup vaults for a few clients but don’t wish to waste time or bandwidth if I’ll just have to do it all over again.

Also, any word on a release date for the reseller server edition?

    Thanks
