Jungle Disk has always attracted a technically savvy user who has a good understanding of storage concepts like backup, network drives, and sync. While most competing online storage services offer just one of those features, we’re proud that our software is unique in its ability to combine all three features in a single product and user interface. However, we recognize that robust feature set and perceived complexity turns off some potential users – and, makes our customers hesitant to recommend the software to less tech savvy friends and family.
Online backup is critical for all computer users today with the growth of digital personal assets – pictures, music, and files. To help address the needs of a more casual computer user, we are introducing Jungle Disk Simply Backup. As the name implies, Simply Backup is a new version of Jungle Disk for home users who just need a simple, secure, and inexpensive online backup service. The Simply Backup software is built on the same core backup engine that underlies Jungle Disk Desktop, Workgroup, and Server Editions but eliminates the complexity of supporting multiple online disks and network drives.
As with our Desktop Edition software, Simply Backup supports multiple computers at no additional cost, making it a very compelling option for multi-PC households versus other online backup services that charge per computer. If a user decides to move to the full Jungle Disk Desktop Edition in the future, the process is simple and all their data moves with them.
Pricing and availability for Jungle Disk Simply Backup will be announced soon.

Will there be a beta to try the software? Will my lifetime license let me use it?

We aren’t planning a public beta. Right now a Desktop license won’t work with it, since it’s just a subset of the Desktop functionality. Is there a reason you think you’d want to use it instead of Desktop?

Wow, you guys read my mind! I was just wishing for this product last night, while setting up a new iMac for my mom.
I blogged about it here:

Is Jungle Disk Simply Backup the same NAS offering as suggested on the support forum? – http://support.jungledisk.com/forums/30235/entries/28826
If so, will it need to run from a PC or will it be available as a NAS add-on application?

The only thing that currently keeps me away from JD is S3-pricing. It is cheap, but not if you end up paying more for just the webspace than other services charge for software, webspace and recovery and if the amount of data you have to upload is just really that big. If “Simply Backup” comes with a flat fee (for storage usage), I would be glad to come back into the jungle!

Junglefan – that’s a feature of the Desktop Edition in 3.0

If it is a subset of the Desktop app … why couldn’t we use it? I understand not getting new features without upgrading or paying. But if it is just a stripped down version I wouldn’t mind trying it! Plus I wouldn’t mind testing it on the family computer in the den.
Plus I love playing with new software! It’s the computer engineering part of myself getting to me
Anyway, keep up the good work guys! I am one VERY happy customer based on the amount you check your Support Forums, Blog Posts, and @ replies on twitter! Keep it up!

Will there be a Reseller version that we can market to our clients?

Will you be able to use both JungleDisk and SimplyBackup – one for work and one for home with different accounts… or alternatively just JungleDisk with two accounts.

Jungle Dave,
Will Simply Backup be able to install on sbs server 2003 & 2008 for those just wanting a backup for a local server?
Will the GUI be the same as current desktop edition but with the network drive option removed e.t.c? or is it something new?
I have no need of multiple online disks, and never used the network drive feature because of distance issues, so this may be more useful.

Yohan – Simply Backup is designed for Desktops. You should use the Server Edition for server backups (it doesn’t include the network drive fwiw).

Ian – yes.

Angus – no, we’re not planning a reseller version of Simply Backup. There will be a reseller version of the Server Edition, and the normal Reseller Edition can be locked down in 3.0 to provide only backup (no network drive/sync) if you prefer.

Peter – there’s no business reason we wouldn’t let Desktop users use Simply Backup, it’s primarily a support issue. One of the biggest support issues we’ve found is users buying one piece of software and using or trying to use one of our other products on accident. If we allowed Simply Backup to just work with the Desktop license we’d undoubtably end up with Desktop users who accidentally installed Simply Backup and can’t find their network drive and other features.

This is a great idea. Personally, I use Jungle Disk with Amazon S3 as a global network share but I use BackBlaze.com ($50/year) for backup of my critical data. Adding sync made Jungle Disk even more valuable as a service/product. If Jungle Disk can combine backup (including external USB or Firewire drives) with ease of recovery ( files on a DVD or USB drive ) then I would be very excited.
