Try the new Jungle Disk Web Access beta

As I mentioned a few days ago, although we’ve been quiet recently it’s not because we haven’t been busy. To the contrary, we have a some exciting new products, enhancements, and upgrades (including the much anticipated Jungle Disk 3.0) that we’ll be rolling out shortly.

One of the enhancements we’ve been working on is a new interface to Jungle Disk Web Access. This interface introduces an easy to use file browsing interface with new features including the ability to move and rename files, multi-file upload, and cookie-based logins allowing you to securely log out with a single click.

If you’d like to try out the new web interface, you can access it at:

https://beta.myjungledisk.com

Both Desktop and Workgroup users can log in on the beta site. If you encounter any issues, please contact our support team via http://support.jungledisk.com.

For Jungle Disk users with personal Amazon S3 accounts, note that as before, you’ll need to register your Amazon S3 keys in your Jungle Disk account to see your online disks in the web access site.

Visually it’s a big improvement, but from a functional viewpoint I am not all that impressed. The fact that the entire screen has to refresh when I open a folder makes it feel very slow. Why not use AJAX (*buzzword alert*) to dynamically build the screen?

What browser are you using? In most browsers it should be able to refresh just the changed portions of the page.

    Looks great. Thanks!

I like. Very responsive. It would be nice if we could right click on a folder and get the size of it, like a Properties option.

Like Vincent, The entire page refreshes for me every time I click open an arrow on a folder, and it takes a while.

    Using Firefox 3.5.2

@Jungle Dave: I use Firefox 3.5. It might be due to the fact that I have my cache turned off (I am a web developer, it’s easier that way), but that is beside the point. The way the system is build it needs to reload the entire page every time you click an item. And that’s just not very efficient (for the user *and* for your server).

Also: the login-screen isn’t a “real” form, the button is a link with a javascript-href in it. Because of that I am not able to fill in my data and just press enter on my keyboard, I have to actually use my mouse to submit my data. Why not just put a there and do your javascript-magic as soon as the submit-event fires?

I am not trying to be a negative person here, I hope this is feedback you can actually use.

We’re working on improving the compatibility for partial-page refresh right now. The login form is something I’d like to get fixed as well before we leave beta.

    Cool, thanks for that :)

Very nice. Replacing context menues, as Alan Williams noted, would be very nice… much like Google does for Google Docs.

I’m very much looking forward to JD3, as well as official Windows 7 32/64 support.

I’m seeing the whole page refresh too. I’m on Mac OSX 10.5.8 with Safari 4.0.3. It makes for a very clunky experience.

Also, I wish there was a way to store my Amazon disk password with my Jungle Disk account, so I don’t have to enter two passwords.

In any case, I still love Jungle Disk, but with companies like Sugar Sync (with iPhone is a dream) gaining share, they’ve got to step up.

Why isnt there any pictures of what it looks like for people who are interested in the product. No trial..must sign up for both JD and S3 to even get a look in

forgot to add I wanted to see if you can force a restore job to a computer from the web interface.

That is if a remote computer hs JD installed and automatically backing up, can I login to the website and have a file restore on that remote machine without actually being able to logon to that machine remotely?

Hope you understand what I mean

I like what I see so far.

I suggested improvement would be to allow multiple files in a directory to be selected and then dragged-and-dropped to a different directory.

To change permission for files would be great, if you have a public bucket at amazon.

Yes, you can change the security settings under the Account Settings to medium or higher. That will disconnect the drive when you shut the activity monitor.

Is the Web Access beta also available to try with the msb.net domain?

@beq – Not yet. We’ll need to develop a differently skinned version of the site for white label partners.

    Hi all,

That’s for sure the design is better than the old one. But the fonctionnalities are not so revolutionning.

For me (and many people I think), the first use to the web interface is to get a file from any pc. And we all know the name of the file we’re looking for but we rarely know the path where it is stored that’s why I was hoping to find a search box.

Why can’t I purchase the software anymore and I have to lease it now forever? I purchased one license already. I would like to purchase one now for another person.

Does this need a Jungle Disk PLUS account? I dont see anything in the files area.

It would be nice if you could link to a tokenized URL for people to download files from your JungleDisk. Otherwise, nice :)

  23. Jungle Dave said,

    September 8, 2009 @ 11:28 am

Yes, Jungle Disk Plus is required for lifetime users who wish to use web access.

We’ve moved to a subscription model to simplify the pricing, lower the signup cost, and allow us to innovate with new backend-supported services.

  25. Jungle Dave said,

    September 8, 2009 @ 11:34 am

We agree search would be useful, however it’s not something supported by the cloud storage services, and the encryption used by Jungle Disk makes it difficult to implement ourselves.

  26. David said,

What would be really nice is if you could actually view your files online as well as download them, especially if you use your jungle disk as a media archive. Sort of like how you can view a folder of photos as a slideshow in windows. If you backup your videos you should be able to stream them through the browser. Same thing for documents, pdfs, etc.

    Anothers suggestions :

1/ “Download folder”, not only files (one per one).
2/ Thumbails for image files ? (not important but easy to implement i think)

    Wish you good development !

Looks great. Selecting multiple files and moving at once is a must have. Trying to relocate hundreds of files is a major pain.

The new interface is nice but now I am having an issue with using the webdav capability of Zotero.
    https://www.myjungledisk.com/nareshseegobin/zotero is not available.
If there is a workaround that will be much appreciated since I am using Zotero to sync all my research from laptop to desktop.

    Thanks.

Naresh – you can use https://legacy.myjungledisk.com for now to continue to use WebDAV

Multiple file upload is a very good improvement.
Are you planning to create a feature to upload and download a whole directory in one go instead of simply using multiple file upload?
