After almost 6 months of hard work by our dedicated development team, we’re pleased to announce that Jungle Disk 2.50b is now available for all users. This release includes highly requested features such as service support, native filesystem integration on Windows, and EU support for Jungle Disk Plus. The full list of new features is below.
- Installs and runs as a background service. Will keep running even if Jungle Disk Monitor is closed or logged out.
- Automatic backups are performed even when not logged in to the computer
- Native filesystem support on Windows 2000, XP, Vista, 2003 and 2008
- EU support for Jungle Disk Plus
- Native 64-bit versions for Windows and Linux
- New download resume ability for large file downloads and restores
- Wake from sleep for backups now available on Mac in addition to Windows
- Backup in-use files feature works on Vista without UAC constraints
- Easy backup of data for multiple user accounts on the same computer
- “Time-machine” style restore interface, allowing to you restore files from a point-in-time view of your backup
- Automatic updates on Windows (built-in) and Mac (using Sparkle)
Jungle Disk 2.5 is a free upgrade for all users. Use the links below to download the new version now!
For users who downloaded the 2.50a Release Candidate version last week, you can automatically upgrade to 2.50b by selecting “Check for Updates” on the Help menu of Jungle Disk Monitor. Note that 64-bit Windows users will need to download the upgrade manually using the links above, due to a problem with automatic updates on 64-bit Windows in the 2.50a release.

Awesome news!
One question though – where do I find the 64bit Linux version? There is only one download listed for linux, and it’s contents are: “jungledisk: ELF 32-bit LSB executable”.

I had the Jungle Disk 2.5 RC installed on my 64bit Windows. For some reason the auto update downloaded the 32bit release. I think you should look into this issue with the auto-update.

A quick question: I’m testing 2.4 at the moment and am thinking of buying 2.5. But one thing is worring me: When the JD monitor is running, I can’t start my local Apache server. Skype does this too, it blocks port 80 or something along those lines. Workaround: turn off JD and Skype, launch Apache, turn JD and Skype back on again. Annoying, but no problem. But I can’t do that with a background service that easily, can I?
Do you have any details or ideas concerning this problem?
Apart from that, great software!

I downloaded the Reseller edition for my Vista 64 computer and it tells me that it is for 32bit only.

Can I run the service from my user account? I like my files to be encrypted on the disk and jddesktopserviceuser doesn’t have permission. This is quite a serious problem for me…

The missing 64-bit downloads for Linux and the reseller version have been put up on the download page. Sorry for the confusion!

@epsy – The port 80 limitation is removed with the native filesystem integration in 2.5

@Tim – we recommend in that case using the USB version, which you can run under your local account. We don’t support running the service under your own account, but you’re free to try if you’d like.

Do you plan to add “real-time” sync between machines and Amazon like Dropbox?

@Marc – sync is something we’ve heard quite a few requests for, and we are considering it for a future release.

I’ve just upgraded and Jungledisk monitor is totaly hung!!! I installed it from my admin account, rebooted as requested, logged on with my user account and its all hung.
Please don’t tell me you have to run it as an administrator ? If so what the point of using services?

I’ve managed to fix this. It wasn’t an ‘admin’ issue after all and JD 2.50b works fine from my ‘user’ account.
I’ve seen on the forums issues with Kaspersky Internet security, but it looks like Kaspersky Anti-Virus 2009′s also has issues that causes Jungle disk to hang.
To fix it set the Kaspersky Anti-Virus 2009 ‘Network – Monitored Ports’ to ‘Monitor select ports only’.
I’ve raised a support request asking Jungle disk to let me know which port is having issues to this can be further locked down.

Dave,
Any plans to support Windows Small Business Server. It would require VSS support to backup exchange and SQL files. This would be a great WIN for JD and the SMB Market.

Does the Linux version have the ability for JunglediskMonitor to close and let things keep running?
I’d love to be able to have a background version running (handling auto-backups, etc) but occasionally be able to use the monitor to check on it. Right now, it looks like the Linux version hasn’t changed: if I start the cli jungledisk, and then try the Monitor, it complains about another version running.

I’d prefer not to have the JungleDisk “network drive” mounted all time. I can’t find a preference to disable that.

What does “EU support for Jungle Disk Plus” mean?
Jungle Dave said,
February 13, 2009 @ 11:20 am
@Jonathan – That means the Jungle Disk Plus features like upload resume and block-level updates now work with S3 buckets in the EU.
@David – you can disable the Network drive under the Network Drive settings of the configuration dialog.
@Mark – not at this time, due to the cost and bandwidth required for online backup of full machine images
