We’re pleased to announce a new beta release for Jungle Disk 2.5. Unlike our previous betas which included only the Desktop Edition, this release is available for the Workgroup and Reseller editions as well.
We discussed the biggest new features in the 2.49c release in a previous blog post, the full list of changes since the previous beta is below:
- Native filesystem support on Windows
- Added EU support for Jungle Disk Plus
- Added ability to change username/password on network share for automatic backup
- New prompt for password options for enhanced local security
- Fixed backup log creation with unicode pathnames
- Fixed Jungle Disk service account showing up in user list
- Fixed “service not running” errors on startup
For users still on 2.10, the other new features in the 2.49 beta are:
- Native 64-bit versions for Windows and Linux
- New download resume ability for large file downloads and restores
- Installs and runs as a background service. Will keep running even if Jungle Disk Monitor is closed or logged out.
- Automatic backups are performed even when not logged in to the computer
- Wake from sleep for backups will now be available on Mac in addition to Windows
- Backup in-use files feature will work on Vista without UAC constraints
- Easy backup of data for multiple user accounts on the same computer
- “Time-machine” style restore interface, allowing to you restore files from a point-in-time view of your backup
We’re very excited about the 2.5 release, but want to make sure it gets tested on a wide variety of systems before the final release, especially with the new filesystem support on Windows. If you’d like to try 2.49c, just follow the download links below:

Any chance of a USB Windows release for this beta or do we need to wait until final?

Problem: Using the network drive, JD tried to read all the files into cache, as usual. I hate that, but that’s not the problem. Problem is that with 2.49c (64-bit) I couldn’t cancel it in JD Monitor — Windows Explorer and JD Monitor would freeze, then after a while when I could get back in and press cancel, every cancel would just restart the same file downloading.

YES! MS Word in not getting stuck anymore when editing directly on JungleDisk. I assume it is the native file support – thank you so much!
As a geographically distributed small company we work with three people preferrably directly on JD as our network drive. That worked with Open Office, not with MS Office (and we work with both, as OO does not have all the features we need), that stopped responding after some time. So now with 2.49C it works like a breeze – time to ask my two partners to also update to 2.49C !

In the daily report is there anywhere to see what version of JD the client is running?
I dont see it in the ‘Details’ when I look at the files, it would be a nice addition.
Keep up the good work.
Thanks!
-Jason

Agree with Jason. The prompt for password option would be particularly useful security-wise for USB client. They may get your S3 access keys, but that could keep them out of your buckets.

Love where JungleDisk is heading – can’t wait for the final release 2.5.
Wishlist for the future:
- Deduplication: to further improve backup efficiency; also making it practical to do backups accross mutlitple systems that share common files.
Enterprise and/or Small Business Server editions: would handle MS Exchange, databases, and such.
Keep up the great work!
Alessandro

Will this work with Windows Home Server or am I stuck with the year-old beta?

I’d really like to see Jungle Disk have a feature where it would automatically break up files larger than 5 GB into 5 GB chunks then put them back together again when downloading back to the client. Making the 5 GB file limit irrelevant and unnoticeable to the user. I realize 5GB is a large file size, but there are times when larger files need to be uploaded. GSpace does something like this with files uploaded to a Google mail account, breaking the files into 10mb chunks, but only showing one file to the user.

@Carlos – Yes, you can install 2.5 on WHS, but will need to manage it using the WHS admin desktop

Love 2.49c, but since installed, there is constant, 24/7, reading of backups and setting of attributes.

This release is terrific — thank you! Mac OS question: Is there any way to auto-mount a bucket upon login without launching the JD app?
