Jungle Disk 2.49a Beta Release

We’re pleased to announce the release of the first public beta for Jungle Disk 2.5 (beta version 2.49a). Jungle Disk 2.5 represents a significant architecture change for the software, with the core backup and WebDAV drive mapping functionality of Jungle Disk now running as a background service.

Key features in this beta:

  • Installs and runs as a background service. Will keep running even if Jungle Disk Monitor is closed or logged out.
  • Automatic backups are performed even when not logged in to the computer
  • Wake from sleep for backups will now be available on Mac in addition to Windows
  • Backup in-use files feature will work on Vista without UAC constraints
  • Easy backup of data for multiple user accounts on the same computer
  • “Time-machine” style restore interface, allowing to you restore files from a point-in-time view of your backup

Release notes for this release:

  • Only the Desktop Edition is currently available. Future betas will include the Workgroup Edition as well.
  • The current beta supports Windows (all versions) and Mac 10.4 and later. Linux, Mac 10.3.9, and USB will be supported in a future beta release.
  • The current beta is 32-bit. 64-bit native versions of Windows and Linux will be available in a future beta.
  • Mac users may experience installation issues if their boot volume is not their primary drive
  • On Windows, the Jungle Disk Monitor application must be running for the network drive to be automatically mapped
  • Selecting network drives or UNC paths for backup in Windows is not presently supported, but will be in a future beta.
  • If you revert to Jungle Disk 2.10 you may need to delete your cache directory

Sound good? Download the beta from our Desktop Edition beta downloads page.
Post any feedback or support requests to our Jungle Disk 2.5 Beta Forum.

Lastly, for those of you who wanted to watch the Rackspace announcement event, they’ve now posted a replay.  The portion with Jungle Disk starts around 14:30.

Note that the Linux version already has a command line client that runs as a daemon, essentially the same functionality offered on the other platforms in 2.5. There will be some changes in 2.5 for Linux, but it has already been ahead in this area to start with.

It would be great to know if this version of JD2 will finally work fully with 1.0 buckets.
Whenever I install any JD2 release it messes up my files – almost half of them (folders, files) “disappear” – but will show again when reinstalling 1.5c. (Have never changed encryption key or stuff)

I’m on Leopard. The default backup job is hosed. The schedule doesn’t work and you can’t delete it. Oh well, that’s beta for you.

Should I install this beta over the top of my existing Jungle Disk installation (Windows), or as a separate install?

@David – You should uninstall any earlier release, although the 2.5 installer will try to do this automatically.

Any hints on how long of a wait it’ll be on a workgroup beta? I would think, no offense to you lowly desktop folk, that having the background process would be MORE critical to the workgroup functionality… :)

Seriously though, is this a few hours/days out, or another 4-6 weeks, or….?

Great news! I can’t wait to try it! And thanks for making a great product! I’m thrilled that my data is now safely backed up, and your software made it dead simple.

Can you comment on the possibility of adding some Dropbox-like functionality in the future? I’m really loving Dropbox for its offline and sync functionality. Any plans to add this type of functionality to Jungledisk in the future?

    Hello
I have downloaded & installed the beta version and now every time I try to start the Jungle Disk Desktop I receive an error – “Unable to connect to service. Details: xServiceNotRunning – The Jungle Disk Service is installed but is not running. Please start the service before running Jungle Disk. OK”. If I do a “repair” install the service is started and everything works until a restart of the computer. I can also go into services and start the JD monitor manually and the Jungle Desktop will function. I have removed the previous version “2.10?”of Jungle Disk.

What do you suggest to correct this issue?

    Thanks

    Bill A

Seriously, though, any word on when the beta may come over to workgroup users? Unstable and runs as a service would actually be vastly preferable to the current situation at my company.

    Thanks!

    I agree with Deano.

We really need the services function!

It’s been unusually quiet! Any update on the 2.5 release?
