Jungle Disk 2.0 Beta Released!

Today we’re very pleased to announce the first beta release of the highly anticipated Jungle Disk 2.0. This beta, as well as the final release, are a free upgrade for all paid Jungle Disk users. The Jungle Disk 1.0 beta was released two years ago this week and Jungle Disk 2.0 is the biggest update since then. We have completely reworked both the internal engine and user interface for Jungle Disk. We now support multiple bucket types, there is an entirely new user interface including a brand new backup selection interface, and a whole host of new features including support for multiple buckets and backup jobs, support for European S3 data centers, and greatly improved performance in a number of areas. This release also lays the groundwork for our upcoming Workgroup and Reseller editions which were announced recently. More details on the beta test for those editions will be coming soon.

Many of you have been anxiously awaiting this release and I encourage you to check it out, however, please note that this is our first public beta of 2.0. We have done extensive internal testing, but it is likely that some issues won’t show up until tested under a wider range of systems and network conditions. We would caution against using this release for any buckets that contain data that you do not have a copy of elsewhere (e.g. on your local machine). While we have never had a major loss or corruption issue in a public release, it would be safer to wait for a later beta before testing on any irreplaceable data.

Before downloading the release, please read through the release notes completely. Of particular interest, you should read the section on upgrading your buckets to the new Jungle Disk 2.0 format (which is optional). The release notes also contain a list of the new features to look for. You may also want to take a review our new Online Manual and Knowledge Base (both of which are also in “beta” and incomplete).

When you’re ready to take the plunge you can download the Jungle Disk 2.0 beta and install over your current version (just exit Jungle Disk first). If you need to go back to 1.50c you can install it directly over 2.0. Note that the About dialog for this beta reports its version as “1.99a” - the first non-beta release will be 2.00a.

Please post any questions or issues with the beta to our special Jungle Disk 2.0 beta forum.

First off, thanks a huge heaping bunch for an awesome program - I love JD and find it essential to my computing life… that said… :-) Please tell me you are going to update the dock icon for the mac before the official release, it’s so, so bad… I nearly *gasp’d* out-loud seeing it’s return in the beta.

  2. Jungle Dave Says:

Is the icon not displaying correctly for you, or do you just not like it? Please e-mail developer@jungledisk.com with a screenshot if it looks wierd for you.

  3. Jay Says:

I have been waiting for the reseller edition, but congrats on this first step. Does this version use the new rename feature released by Amazon for fast renames or fast renames will still proxy via EC2?

  4. Jungle Dave Says:

Fast renames are still done via EC2. Amazon just released a beta of their copy feature today - we’ll incorporate it in a future beta if it works well.
It’s also worth noting that in Jungle Disk 2.0 buckets, moving or renaming files & directories are instant, without the need to copy a file.

  5. Jay Says:

Thanks. Can you elaborate more on ‘instant rename’. Does that mean the file name is changed locally and not on S3? What if I loose that local database / pointer file? Is that backed up to S3?

  6. MacMacken Says:

@Dave: Just compare your icon with the icon of Transmit or any other Mac application with a decent icon:

    http://www.macmacken.com/wp-content/files/icon_jungledisk_001.png

Don’t you see a problem, for example regarding the resolution of the icon? The aliasing looks ugly in particular as I mentioned a few months ago (cf. http://forum.jungledisk.com/viewtopic.php?t=7911).

  7. Bence Says:

    Hi,

could you please tell me, do you use an external cryptographic API for AES encryption, or did you implement this yourself? Which API do you use if any?

  8. Jungle Dave Says:

@Jay - a pointer file is stored on S3 for the instant rename - nothing is stored locally.

    @Bence - We use OpenSSL’s libcrypto

  9. Jungle Dave Says:

@MacMacken - Thanks. I’m still not sure what’s causing the aliasing issue (which we don’t see here), but we can certainly look at shipping higher res icons. Apparently Leopard now supports up to 512×512!

  10. Jay Says:

great. may be a minor beta glitch. I renamed a file and then deleted local cache. When I restarted jungle disk, it showed me two files instead of one (the old one and the new one). So the cache is rebuilding for sure automatically from S3.

  11. MacMacken Says:

@Jungle Dave: Thanks to you! JD 2.0 beta looks very promising, you and your time have further improved an already great application. I’m looking forward to the first final version of JD 2.0! :)

  12. David Says:

@Jungle Dave: That sounded a bit rude, sorry :-) With the talk and requests in the forum for new icons, I think I just assumed it would be replaced. It’s just we have a dock full of high resolution beautiful icons, and then there is Jungle Disk glaring at me as if to say ‘help’ :-P I’m no designer and can’t offer much criticism other than to say, it just feels out of place.

  13. Steve Says:

Still lacking any type of ability to notify a user of a completed backup, unless I am missing it. Like the Start Backup on main page when you click the taskbar icon.

  14. MacMacken Says:

Uh, great typo, ‘time’ instead of ‘team’. Well, I guess it was clear enough from the context! ;)

  15. Chris Says:

What is the benefit of choosing version 2 bucket over compatibility bucket? Why would I (or anyone) want to do that?
instant renames - I assume this wil be added to compatibility bucket in future
encryption - why can’t this be supported with compatibility bucket?
unlimited buckets - that’s so not true. What you are calling a bucket is not really a bucket at S3.

What else is the benefit of version 2.0 bucket? or you just want to keep us tied to Jungle Disk by providing some advanced features only to those buckets where files can be only read by jungle disk?

  19. Jungle Dave Says:

@Chris - Instant renames can’t be added to compatibility buckets due to the way their keys are structured. It’s a unique feature of JD buckets.
Encryption isn’t supported on compatibility buckets because that defacto makes them not compatible with other utilities (none of which support encryption).
While the “unlimited buckets” are not actual S3 buckets in the true sense of the word, it doesn’t really matter - within Jungle Disk they act like any other bucket and are managed independently.
Using our own bucket format isn’t an attempt at lock-in - it’s a way to provide features that can’t be done any other way. In fact, in 2.0 we specifically added the compatibility buckets option for users who want to keep their options open and user other tools as well. As with JD1.0 buckets we’ll be publishing documentation and full source for accessing JD2.0 buckets so you’ll never need to worry about being “locked in” (or out).

  20. Yreadman Says:

Is there a way to get a extend on the trial? I wanted to try out 2.0 beta but I’ve used up my trial days on the older version, let me know, thanks!

  21. Jungle Dave Says:

@Yreadman - Yes, please e-mail billing@jungledisk.com and include your AWS Access key and we’ll extend your trial.

  22. Xet7 Says:

Does Jungle Disk Plus resume work with Jungle Disk 2.0 buckets using US servers? I don’t use web access.

  23. Jungle Dave Says:

Yes, Jungle Disk Plus resume and block level updates work great with JD2.0 buckets.

  24. Aelver Says:

Any estimate on when the non-beta release will be? Days? Weeks? Months?

    Thanks.

  25. Jungle Dave Says:

The timing of the final release will depend on feedback and issues found in the beta. It is likely weeks rather than months however.

  26. Xet7 Says:

With Jungle Disk 2.0 buckets, is the feature now enable that file size is unlimited?

  27. Jungle Dave Says:

No, the 5GB Amazon limit still applies.

  28. Mark Says:

Can I run JD 2.0 Beta along side 1.5c (in a differnt folder structure)? I would like to try out the beta but don’t want to overwrite the current version.

  29. Jungle Dave Says:

@Mark - Yes, you can. Just install it into a different folder.
